About BBAAI

  • "Billboard Advertisers are Idiots" is a protest against billboard advertising, which is a blight on the landscape and the mindscape.

Why the name-calling?

  • The act of protest brings attention to the thing being protested. In the case of billboard advertisers, that's exactly what they want: attention. We are purposely ridiculing billboard advertisers so they do not benefit from our protest.

What is the goal?

  • Our goal is to inform billboard advertisers that their billboards are not welcome in our community and discourage them from purchasing billboard ads.

How do you plan to accomplish your goal?

  • When we feature a billboard advertiser, we will try to find out who makes the billboard purchasing decision and contact them directly to lodge our protest. We will also post the contact information so that you can lodge your own protest directly.

We are also hoping that our protest will reach the first page of results in search engines when the advertiser is searched.

How can I participate?

  • 1. You can contact the billboard advertisers that are featured here and ask them to stop advertising on billboards.

    2. Blog about us, comment about us, link to us, digg us, etc. -- all these things will help to spread the word and elevate our search engine standing.

    3. Submit your local billboard non-idiot. Send us a photo and as much information as you can about the advertiser.

    4. Help us find the decision makers and post your findings in comments.

Neil Leeds, the owner of Leeds Mattress, not only returned my email, but also called and left a very nice message about the work that he does.

Below are his email replies, and my email reply.

Neil:

"I would hope this is not a joke, but that is what billboards are for."

"I hope that they do not bother you but they help build our business and keep over 70 jobs here in los angeles.I have never in my 11 years had anyone complain about my advertising."

"We need to focus our attention on the blight of graffiti all over our city. That is the worst problem and litter. The boards our part of our landscape they have been around for ages."

My reply:

"Thank you for your reply and your voice mail. I appreciate that you are a hard working and successful business person.

"Billboard advertising is widely recognized as a form of visual pollution and blight. It is outright banned in some communities. I will try to have more people contact you to let you know how people feel about billboards.

"You have lots of choices for how you market your business. All that we are asking is that you choose not to advertise on billboards."

I have to agree with the head of Leeds here. The city of Los Angeles has far more offensive intrusions on its cityscape than his billboards, which don't really bother me.
Get rid of the graffiti and litter, make wider sidewalks that support pedestrian activity. I would much rather walk past a LEEDs billboard or any advertisment for that matter, than a wall covered with mindless tagging or a sidewalk full of trash.

Billboards and advertising are a key part of capitalism, which drives this country's economy. The chances of them disappearing anytime soon is slim. Besides, cool advertisments and billboards can make for visually interesting cityscape in my opinion.

I just think there are far more urgent problems in the city of angels that some billboards.
